I need some recent portraits, and have made some attempts at selfies.  It’s extra challenging when you can’t see what the camera does.

I had the clever idea that I can plug an external monitor into the HDMI and use that for framing etc.

It almost works.  Unfortunately, if I set the camera’s exposure to use strobes the live view is so dark it won’t auto focus.  Even when I put it on manual focus, it often refuses to fire the shutter.

Also the screen is so dark, it’s damn near useless for live view.

And there is no way at all to change things so that you can use live view with a flash.

Sigh.

The things people do! How about asking someone else to press the
shutter? Deeper sigh.

There is some level of challenge to getting someone over here when I’m doing this.  I’m also experimenting with lighting.

I currently have the external monitor plugged in and have a remote trigger, so I’ll take a photo and look at it on the display during preview.

Isn't there a timer on the camera?

If you're doing portraits, you should be able to use some kind of
stand-in to set framing & focus. I've got one of those Elvis cut-outs I
use.

Just set it up so the distance to the flat is the same as the distance
to your eye when you take its place.

At school they had a half mannequin, but I know some people who use one
of those head forms they sell in wig shops.

Yup.  I’ve got a CD rack that I would put on a kitchen stool for that purpose
https://photos.app.goo.gl/8t9PvCy8wTxUqZoZ7

But I find the real time feedback after each shot to be useful.  I can see how moving my head affects the lighting, if I adjust something I can if I did something to totally blow the exposure, or if I accidentally moved something into the frame a lot more easily than walking all of the way around to look through the viewfinder each time.

I will also note that autofocus is invaluable for self portraits.

Larry -
When I've taken photos of myself for various reasons over the years  I
used a couple of different methods..  most recently I set a chair with a
back on it
a few feet from the camera and put a gray card or something like it at
the level my head and shoulders would be .. then I took a photo of the card
and checked the exposure , etc... changed the focus to manual so it
wouldn't change.. set the self timer on to 10 sec .. and sat down.  it
never is right the first click of course... if I had had a remote I
would have clicked away, changing my expression, etc..

also, you can set up a mirror next to the camera at the level of the
lens and use a remote for the exposure .. it's more about teaching
yourself how to model
than anything else.

You end up with a bunch of shots from which you can chose one..

I think I learned some things from my last shoot and am giving it another try tonight.

Oddly, things seem to be mostly working just fine with live view. I can see enough on the display to frame myself where I want to be, I can see the preview screen and get an idea how things turned out, and using my wired remote trigger I can take photos when I want.

On Dec 1, 2021, at 9:16 AM, Doug Brewer doug@dougbrewerphoto.com wrote:

Isn't there a timer on the camera?

Yeah, that’s how I took the last set:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157720168248521

Warning for the faint of heart, there are a few shirtless ones at the end.

Ann also explained how I could do the self portraits using a film era camera.  I even have some self portraits I took years ago by sticking a mop in a bucket, manually focusing on that, and trying to stand in the same place using the self timer.

The point of my complaint was that there are a lot of advantages to being able to see what is in the frame.  I don’t know about you folks, but when I’m taking photos I don’t aim the camera and shut my eyes before pressing the shutter.  At least not often.

However, like I said things were working great tonight, until I realized that if I put the camera in single frame mode, I wouldn’t get a bunch of second frames with uncharged strobes, and the K-1 turned the flash off.  Long story short, in live view, if you put it in “motordrive” mode, whatever they call it, they turn off the electronic shutter.  Also, something that isn’t well documented, if the camera is in electronic shutter mode, it won’t fire a flash.  I had to disable electronic shutter to use live view with a flash.

Whoever wrote the K-1 manuals should be soundly beat about the head and shoulders with a tiltall tripod.  It should simply say what the effects of being in different modes are.  sigh.  They spent too much time trying to make the manuals so they don’t scare off morons who would be better off just using their phone cameras and don’t tell the people who know photography what they need.  But that is a rant for another day.

For folks who are curious, I’ll put proofs from tonight here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157720194746983

I am incapable of critiquing photos of myself, so I post proofs and beg friends to tell me which ones suck the least.

I am incapable of critiquing photos of myself, so I post proofs and beg friends to tell me which ones suck the least.

Sigh.

Seems to have worked well. You're quite a large customer - the hair even amplifies that!  I looked in vain for one with a smile. Unfortunately, when I try to force a smile it looks like I am fighting a near terminal case of gas.

Also, almost a year ago I lost a tooth that was damaged when I was in high school, and I’m still a month or two out from finishing with the implant.
