a friend donated a Nikon coolpix P520 from 2013 to my ebay shelves..
barely used.. on examination there was a sd card with pics on it in
the camera..but also a battery.  the pictures on the card were from a
trip my friend and his fiance took in June 2013.  the battery won't come
out.
I fear it haddent been touched since. which would be great if he had
taken out the battery before storing it.  :-(

How bad is it?  Possible battery hasn't leaked? Ugh.

I'd actually keep it for a backup and carrying around camera if it could
be fixed and not cost too much.. and sell my Canon SX120 instead.   It
is light enough for me to carry for a while and has great features.

The battery might have just swollen but not leaked.  Any camera repair places who would attempt to take it out for you?  Watchmaker?  Musical instruments? Anyone who works on delicate stuff, really.  Definitely not anyone who works on motor vehicles. 8 -)

Thanks, Mike

Before I took it somewhere I wanted a couple of opinions from voices I
trust - my tried and true repair place near me closed , where there were
still
guys that knew me going back a few years.  So I'll take a "maybe" - .  I
had the perfect watchmaker guy but his shop  near me.is gone.. though I
may be able to find him.

A last resort is two component epoxy glue. Glue something to the
battery which allows you to apply force (after the glue hardens, app
24h) and pull the battery out. A swollen battery is end of life so the
glue won't harm it.

Someone posted this on a forum somewhere:

For removing a stuck (AA) battery - from my camera - this worked like a charm and was least intrusive.

I put the camera on it's side so the stuck battery was facing the ceiling and was COMPLETELY LEVEL.
I smeared a little super glue onto the top of the stuck battery but not close to the battery's edge!!!
I placed a thick metal nut on top of and in the center of the battery. The nut must be smaller than the battery.
I added extra super glue into the center region of the metal nut.
I let it set until the next day. Then, simply used a wrench on the nut to move it until it was free; then could simply extract the battery.

That only works with a round battery. The nikon probably has a flat
battery. Using superglue is difficult because it's a liquid and one
drop too much and everything (camera and battery) is glued together.

Squeeze some glue out on a piece of junk, then use a Q-tip to transfer
a small amount to the area where you actually want glue to be.

Just a SWAG, but you could take it to a local camera store and they'd get the
battery out for you & sell you a new battery at the same time.

Although it looks like you can get two EN-EL5 batteries plus a charger from
Amazon for the same price as just a battery from B&H.

Full report later -- after I charge the spare battery that was in the
camera bag ...

John, that is just what I did.. took it to K&M near me , I hardly had
gotten the story out when the gal behind the counter took out tools to
do the chore.  She
said the chamber was clean!  We will find that out for sure after I
charge the spare battery that came with the camera.. K&M didn't carry
them.. and owner doubted I could find one on line if the one I have
doesn't come to life but I knew already that I could, having seen them
on ebay..

Just got home..  Expect a PESO to follow by tomorrow if all goes well..

Thanks all for your contributions to this project :-)
