Very cool

The K10 shot looks way out of focus

I like both shots, but expecially the recent one.
How much difference do you think is the electronics, and how much is technique? Were you shooting RAW/DNG or JPG?

grateful that at least the Marriott was not there when I took
my mother to San Antonio during CHristmas week for an overnight and
sight seeing.. we stayed at a a hotel on the Rio - I'll have to
look up which one.. but I don't remembe any really tall buildings in
1974.. THe Marriott was built in 1979

I think the dynamic range is better, but I believe Larry was right, the old
one also isn't in great focus, after he said that I went and looked back at
others from that night and they were much better focused. Not sure what I
did with that one, but it was also the only frame I took of that view
specifically. Probably because memory cards were still small then, this
time I probably took 10 or 15 frames and picked the one I liked best.
The thing is though that is my second most viewed picture on Flickr over
the last 10 years.

So you're referring to the building in the Middle which is the Marriott
Riverwalk and was built in 1979, the building on the left with Marriott on
the top is the Marriott Rivercenter which was built in 1988. Yes there are
two Marriotts across the street from each other. The building on the right
is the Grand Hyatt and was built in 2008, the top floors are condos.
You may have stayed at the Hilton Palacio Del Rio, which is to the right of
that shot and much closer than those hotels. It was built for the 1968
Hemisfair.

Corey...
I said earlier I took my Mom the San Antonio in 1974 around CHristmas...
(She was living in Houston then )
I found my travel journal and it turns out it was 1976 (still before
that tall Marriot was there)
My aunt had a friend who had recommened accomodations.. this is what I
wrote inmy notes
"The motel-hotel Ethel's friend recommended was very handsome, Spanish
style & [our room] looked out
on the canal called the San Antonio river. We are on the first floor, a
few feet higher than the river walkway."
It was not like me to not mention the name of the place.. does it ring
any bells with you?
Glad your photo got me to thinking about this - I enjoyed reading my
journal of that trip

I'm not sure, especially what was where in the 1970s.
Possibly the Hotel Havana which would have been there then, it is a bit up
the river from the main tourist area and small like 27 rooms. But I'm sure
there are other properties that could fit that description also.
And 1976 would have been before either of those Marriott Hotels were
there. The shorter one dates to 1979 and the taller one 1988. Rivercenter
mall wouldn't have been there which the Taller one is attached to. But
Joske's(Large Department Store) would have been there, It is that building
on the Middle left, which was recently completely gutted and renovated, and
now hosts a bunch of different things. Dave & Busters, H&M, an Aquarium,
Lego Store, a food court, etc. I was never in Joske's but it must have
been huge.
