Coming to this pretty late, but companies have to have authorization to
charge your account, otherwise this OMNI reader thing can just suck
money out of every touchless card that wanders by. I can't imagine
that's legal.

Perhaps telling your bank/credit card company that OMNI is not
authorized to charge you would be a better path.

anyone know how I can disable that feature without disabling my regular

regular chip and not near the
swipe strip.

Thanks

I've been using that, actually..  .. but it is annoying to extract the
card from my little purse.

I talked to more bank people.. TD bank has a policy of a fixed amount of
$100 as a cap on contactless usage and it can neither be
lowered or raised on an individual basis - but of course will fight any
unauthorized buys.
Discover won't remove the feature and has no limit on how much you can
spend but
assures challenging any purchases for you that you did not make.

as I said -- excuse to shop for a new holder..

How about cutting a piece of aluminum foil twice the size of the card so that
the card would sandwich between the leaves when you fold it in half?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c1klL4IVBA

Part 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhMkrovtaV0

Maybe if the bank has one of those "paper" sleeves for cards you could glue the
foil to the outside?

I'd talk to the bank again and see if they will give you a RFID sleeve for your
card as a courtesy ... giving away the sleeves would cost them less than giving
away toasters.

I did a quick google search for "sleeve for credit card to prevent contactless
reading" - got a hit from Amazon, so I searched Amazon for RFID blocking sleeves:

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rfid+blocking+sleeves&i=office-products&crid=IORKDXG7RWMQ&sprefix=RFID%2Coffice-products%2C203&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_4

I also did a search for "LeSportsac lanyard" to get an idea what they were like
and I pretty sure cards inside RFID sleeves should fit inside.

And then ... because anything worth doing is worth OVER-doing ... Do RFID
protective sleeves work?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKwJwOm3bfI

Apparently some do, and some are better than others.

but MIke's suggestion of having two swishables in my purse next to each other
would confuse a reader and nothing would get processed... although
I seldom carry more than one card so if somethin untoward occurs only one of my
credit/debit cards is affected.

I really love my pretty little LeSportsac lanyardlike thingy.. if I can find a
small enough one that has the protective stuff sewn in and is not
too heavy I'll switch.

Doug -
It is the placement of the machine on the bus that allows for
contactless payment of bus fare that is the problem.. and it is likely
to have swiped $2.75 from
more people who wear their cards on a lanyard or have them in a pocket
or purse that is at the same level as the fare taker on the bus. It
doesn't affect
people paying full fares that want to use any credit card to pay and so
swish on purpose..  although there have been cases reported of someone
being charged twice..
for those of us who have discounted metro cards the contactless payment
on public transportation is not an option.. we still have to dip or
swipe our senior or disabled citizen cards .  by 2025, we are told, all
busses and train stations will be equipped with OMNI machines and using
them will be the only option.. by then they are supposed to have figured
out how to recognize that one is supposed to get a discount. BTW - the
OMNI reads your phone if your phone has the correct stuff in it, or your
apple watch, etc.

anyway, I"m getting an new little purse

I understand the how. It's the authorization I don't get. Somewhere
along the line, the company has to ask to take the funds. Proximity
isn't permission.

It actually is, in this case..  If you hold a credit card or phone close
enough to a machine that permits "contactless" payments and your card
is set up to do that - that is, has the chip.

The OMNI reader doesn't know that I accidentally leaned too close to it
so that my card ,even in my purse, was
close enough to be read.  Of course the MTA (transit authority) is an
approved collector of funds  The OMNI gadgets are collecting funds for
the MTA.
