OT - tale of woe and techy question for you who are especially electronics/web savvy

People who pay by phone on the tube during rush hour in London are a monstrous pain in the ass as it takes longer for the device to do its thing than it takes for Oyster or contactless, which are instant. This means that the rhythm of people going through the barriers is disturbed, and minor queues build up with jockeying for position into other lines, which causes further disruption, and so ad infinitum.

I'm going to ask my bank to remove the feature if they can...
I dont have an OMNI card - that is the point...  THe omni machine on the
busses and on subways read any card you have that is contactless..
IF the Omni card reader were farther away from the slot we put metro
cards in, I would not have lost my $2.75..
There have been stories of those using contactless procedures and been
charged twice... those with lots more funds than I have would probably
never know..

Quite a few places I go to are not even taking cash nowadays, for the same reason.

Simplest thing to do is to keep your OMNI card separate from your credit/debit cards, and keep the credit/debit cards in an RFID-blocking sleeve, IMO. My little Bellroy wallet has the RFID-blocking material built into it; I use my phone to do most of my purchase transactions anyway nowadays.

You could do worse than just cash.  Unfortunately anything that I can
think of that would disable the contactless system on your card would
probably also disable the chip and swipe strip at the same time.  The
banks and government really want you to be traceable in all your
economic transactions abet for somewhat different reasons.

This really annoys me, so I try to tell them to stuff themselves as
often as possible, and cash is the hardest thing to trace.  It also
can't be automatically deducted from your wallet as yet.

I tried .. I went to the bank today to ask if they could remotely turn
off the switch as Mike had reported he had beena ble to do in England.. but
as you say below, P.J. , disrupting it somehow would also disable the
chip and strip - the gal at th e bank pointed out to me that the "swish"
feature was imbedded right under the chip .

but MIke's suggestion of having two swishables in my purse next to each
other would confuse a reader and nothing would get processed... although
I seldom carry more than one card so if somethin untoward occurs only
one of my credit/debit cards is affected.

I really love my pretty little LeSportsac lanyardlike thingy.. if I can
find a small enough one that has the protective stuff sewn in and is not
too heavy I'll switch.

Just to clarify; the bank does nothing to the card.  It just alters the protocols on your account so that it does not allow contactless payments.

It might be more fruitful to ask the bank via their website, rather than a clerk who doesn’t seem to understand, to set the contactless limit to $0.00.

Right - I understand. but my bank didn't - I could try again.. but I
spent quite a lot of time with a young lady searching for info on how to
do it and their only solution was that I get an ATM card juts for taking
out cash. The bank is and I told them about it being possible in England.

I may try again..

but MIke's suggestion of having two swishables in my purse next to each

I seldom carry more than one card so if somethin untoward occurs only
one of my credit/debit cards is affected.

I really love my pretty little LeSportsac lanyardlike thingy.. if I can
find a small enough one that has the protective stuff sewn in and is not
too heavy I'll switch.

It also
can't be automatically deducted from your wallet as yet.

may have to go back to carrying just cash

just
swish your card on the vicinity of/ over the designated reader and  it
takes your money.  IN NY we have these things called an OMNI reader on
busses and subways.  since I am a senior I have my own card which one
still has to swipe because the Omni machine is reading your regular
credit crds and doesn't know you are old. HOwever  that does not keep
the OMNI machine which is often located right next to the metrocard
slot, from reading a credit card that gets close to it. bottom line..
MY debit card is in a lanyard that hangs on my neck
and at a level that , when I leaned forward to dip my metrocard got
too
close to the OMNI reader and releaved me of $2.75 ..

NOw I have to pay especially close attention to my money so I found
what
happened and eventually got my money back and was told I should
keep my
credit cards in those protective sleeves they make for passport cards.
I also can't get another card without the chip in it that lets you
swish
instead of insert a card ...

anyone know how I can disable that feature without disabling my
regular
chip or swipe strip?  IT is at the opposite end of the card from the
regular chip and not near the
swipe strip.

Thanks

I don't ever sign into my bank on line.. but the person I talked to was
not one of the staff that knew me personally -

I can try again when someone I know well is on staff and phrase it
differently...  also.. it may only have been jammed because they
wanted to send me a special code to my cell phone and I had my cell
phone company remove texting from my account.. of course,
I still get a text from the phone company after I pay my bill.

Thanks, Bob

It might be more fruitful to ask the bank via their website, rather than a clerk who doesn’t seem to understand, to set the contactless limit to $0.00.

P.s. while I'm thinking about that.. perhaps I should just get a new
wallet+lanyard that has the RFID stuff in it.. they are abundant, but
none I've seen on line so far
are quite as nice as the little Lesportsac one I have now that isn't
RFID.  Well, a justifiable shopping expedition is a plus.
