OT - tale of woe and techy question for you who are especially electronics/web savvy

AS

Intro:
we are now issued credit and debit cards with a little "speaker" symbol
on them so that one can be totally contactless when using a card.. just
swish your card on the vicinity of/ over the designated reader and  it
takes your money.  IN NY we have these things called an OMNI reader on
busses and subways.  since I am a senior I have my own card which one
still has to swipe because the Omni machine is reading your regular
credit crds and doesn't know you are old. HOwever  that does not keep
the OMNI machine which is often located right next to the metrocard
slot, from reading a credit card that gets close to it.  bottom line..
MY debit card is in a lanyard that hangs on my neck
and at a level that , when I leaned forward to dip my metrocard got too
close to the OMNI reader and releaved me of $2.75 ..

NOw I have to pay especially close attention to my money so I found what
happened and eventually got my money back and was told I should keep my
credit cards in those protective sleeves they make for passport cards.
I also can't get another card without the chip in it that lets you swish
instead of insert a card ...

anyone know how I can disable that feature without disabling my regular
chip or swipe strip?  IT is at the opposite end of the card from the
regular chip and not near the
swipe strip.

Thanks
ann

I don't think you can disable near field communication without taking the
card apart. About the only option is a sleeve that blocks the signal.

I do have a sleeve.. it just makes my mini purse a bit crowded..
At the moment I"m just swinging it around to my back when I get on a bus
and sadly I see that the little symbol is in fact lined up with the
swipe strip..

may have to go back to carrying just cash

Contactless can be turned off by the banks on individual dards here.
Two thoughts:
1 get a sightly larger purse.
2 keep two contactless cards in your lanyard pouch.  The machine will not choose and will flag up an error.
A further thought; lanyards are usually designed as breakaways these days.  If you have a contactless card on one of those, an enterprising person could swipe it and do some serious damage to your bank balance before you can get it stopped.

Mike - You mean they can turn it off remotely?  I asked if they would
replace and they said no.

My "lanyard" is not really a lanyard.  it is a tiny purse just barely
larger than a credit card in dimensions... a zippered pouch with a
window to show my ID.., a separater beind it that can barely hold two
cards anda  couple of bills.. my vax card is in the puch with my id...
and an outside open pocket that I keep my metro card in ..

I like the idea of two contactless cards though, as in addition to my
debit card I have two credit cards, both of which have the little symbol
on it that says contactless.

My  purse worn as a necklace has the purse part just below my boobs it
is on a ribbon.. the Omni machine read my card through fabric and two
layers of cardboard.

I generally don't carry more than one  credit/debit card at a time..

definitely not getting bigger purse.. I have a shopping bag that holds
8 oz water bottle, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, extra mask and a couple
of cought drops and asperin..

Most I can carry coming home with groceries is about 5 lbs.. once I week
I get deliveries.

Mike - You mean they can turn it off remotely?  I asked if they would

I am sure they can do it here.  I had the feature turned off for years before lockdown made it a logical route to go along.  A card would turn up with contactless enabled, I would go to the bank and have it turned off.  To be clear, they remove the facility fron your account.  All cards are contactless.  For some reason (probably to do with most people using the feature,,,) the default on a new card is enabled.

I don't know whether US banks/credit card providers offer a service to turn off contactless. And I doubt that many issuers are going to offer contactless cards since everyone wants contactless payment now … less chance of spreading diseases that way … and it always costs money to keep separate products avialable as choices.

Quite a few places I go to are not even taking cash nowadays, for the same reason.

Simplest thing to do is to keep your OMNI card separate from your credit/debit cards, and keep the credit/debit cards in an RFID-blocking sleeve, IMO. My little Bellroy wallet has the RFID-blocking material built into it; I use my phone to do most of my purchase transactions anyway nowadays.
