OT: Unrest, Riots, Arson & Looting in South Africa

Just to let you know.

Sparked by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma, South Africa
has descended into a near state of anarchy in several densely populated
areas no doubt orchestrated by Zuma supporters. The level of destruction
is very serious & will lead to many problems in the near future
especially the distribution of essential goods because delivery trucks
have been burned on the highways too.

The authorities have been slow to react but Taxi Associations &
vigilanties are fighting back to save their infrastructure from pillage.
The Police & Army have been overwhelmed.

Fortunately there are no problems in the Lowveld yet but roadblocks have
been set up on the main roads into Phalaborwa as a precaution after
intelligence suggested that hordes may be on their way.

Please look on the internet if you want more details & commentary.

Yes - we've been hearing about the riots via a contact my wife has in SA - and
on our local news channels. Sounds very frightening. I hope the army and police
can restore order soon.

Keep yourself out of harm's way.

Best wishes
Brian

Hope it settles down soon: Zuma could probably make an appeal to his supporters to stop the rioting, but I doubt he
will.
Stay safe, Alan.

Thanks all for your concern. Fortunately we are in a fairly remote part
of SA so well away from the trouble.

Criminals are still taking advantage of the situation where they can.
Yesterday they robbed & vandalised a Crematorium & a Psychiatric
Hospital - can you believe it? Tragic for all the targeted business
owners who have lost so much. An amnesty has been proposed for looters
to return goods without fear of prosecution. One commentator said
yesterday that "concerned" politicians don't have a leg to stand on
because they have been looting state funds from metaphorical
supermarkets for years! Zuma supporters & incompetents lurking in the
Cabinet have now been exposed. A major Cabinet re-shuffle can't be far away.

Sorry to hear that, Alan. I've seen a few references to the situation in
the news but had no idea it was so widespread. I hope you and your
