This topic came up in an earlier post. The HEIC format is a compressed mode, like jpeg. Apple says it uses less space, is more versatile and offers more editing options on the phone. A jpg format can be chosen as an alternative in Settings/Camera/Format. There one can also choose Apple ProRAW which yields a dng file of about 25 meg. Photoshop ACR will convert it just like any other dng/RAW file.
