I remember Amarula. I don’t remember the Mopane drink being moonshine. Maybe I’m a bit confused.

Making Mampoer also known as Wit-blitz (White Lightning), a local
equivalent of Moonshine, is an old Afrikaner tradition. The distilled
spirit ends up well over 50% alcohol. It is flavoured in many different
ways. Now, Mopane worms, the larvae of a species of Emperor Moth which
feed on Mopane leaves, are harvested as a delicasy, especially by the
blacks. The innards are squeezed out & the skins dried in the sun.
Normally they are cooked with butter & garlic or chilli but can also be
added to Mampoer giving a very specific leached out flavour. This type
of Mampoer is known as Wurmsous (worm sauce). Perhaps that is what you
had? Then there is also Amarula liqueur made from the fruit of the
Marula tree - a very popular ladies drink.

Yes, a bit like Pineapple. We have several plants in our garden but have had very few fruits - no idea why. They grow very easily in our climate.

I know the fruit is regarded as good to eat (hence the specific) but I don't remember ever seeing one in fruit, even though I've seen some massive ones.  Have you tried it?

Monstera deliciosa! The BG is the garden wall some 7m beyond. The large
bed in between has been stripped of old plants & will be repopulated
with rocks & aloes.
