Need help with Ricoh GR-3

Recently back from a 5+ week trip ranging from Europe to South America, Northern to Southern hemispheres. After a great deal of agonizing thought, I took the following basic kit:
Most often used:
K-1ii
FA 77/1.8 Ltd
FA 43/1.9 Ltd

Occasionally used:
DFA 100/2.8 macro
and the Ricoh GR-3
Almost never used:
A 20/2.8
A 200/4.0

My intention was to use the Ricoh GR-3 for most wider shots, (it provides approximately 28mm FOV) and I never expected to carry the 20mm when out and about.

My issue: the screen on the back of the Ricoh was very dark. If there was mush ambient light, I could not see anything on the screen. I had a (digital) copy of the user manual, I searched, found what I thought was the menu to control screen brightness, fiddled with it, all to no avail.

Suggestions? Do I need to try again to RTFM? Send it for service someplace? Suggestions on where to send it?

Stan
