DId I get your atttention?
a friend gifted me a Nikon Cool Pix P520 a couple of years ago (2020) He
had it since 2013. I have been using it for occasional out door shooting
or as a back up for photoing ebay stuff because te K-5 is too hard for
me to hold up to my face anymore.. a couple of months ago I started getting
a message on the screen when I turned it on " MODE DIAL IS NOT IN PROPER
POSITION" I twist the dial changing settings and it goes away..
that worked for a while.. but now twisting doesnt work. What I read
online made me think this was annoying serious/expensive to correct. I'm
useless in the fix it yourself category when it comes to other than
non-mechanical/electronic things . the camera is my back up and "takes
good pictures"
bottom line - anyone in this side of the pond want to fiddle with it? or
can recommend someone/some place that would be able to do it without
cleaning out my banking account? Were it not for some recent and
anticpated expenses of a different nature I'd take it someplace ehre and
get estimates
but I can't be running around in this heat especially.
thanks much,
ann

One of the possible causes is oxidation of the contact surfaces of the
selector switch below this dial. Giving it some vigorus exercise might
scratch this oxidation from the contacts.

I had a similar prob with the rear thumbwheel of my *stDS which had gone
totally erratic. A miniscule (!) amount of DeoxIT injected into the
opening of the wheel followed by some exercise cured this and the camera
still works flawlessly to this day.

I had jiggled quite a bit off and on over time .. but I worked at it
more following your suggestion... I got it to work, then turning it off
gave me the nasty message again then I worked more on it and got it back
up! phew! Just was too impatient! Cant get it to go on to auto but
I've pretty much always shot on ap priority anyway.. and I got it
there... phew!
thanks much!
now back to St Andrews - Tiger Woods due to appear in an hour :-)
