PESO: mushrooms on chestnut tree

There is a huge horse chestnut tree standing in the lane in front of our
house, more than 4 m diameter and almost a century old. A few weeks ago I
noticed the arrival of tiny mushrooms in splits of the bark at both sides
of the tree. Though these mushrooms (velvet shank or Flammulina velutipes)
are getting beautiful, I'm concerned about the fate of this tree. I've
asked the community services for an expert to inspect the tree before it is
too late and parts will tumble in the wrong direction during a storm.

Very nice (set). Many chestnut have some kind of disease which is fatal.

Toine, those are beautiful shots!

Chestnuts were the dominant tree species here in Pennsylvania (and many other areas in the US) until a fungal blight arrived in 1904. Our house, built in 1886, has chestnut woodwork throughout. It is so resistant to rot that even our window frames are in fairly good shape.

Some stands of blight-resistant chestnut have been planted experimentally, but of course it will be years before their fate is clear.

The European chestnut (fortunately for all of you across the pond) has been rescued by a virus that is a blight on the fungus. There’s some poetic justice there…

Our European chestnut trees are being killed by an invasive species of
moths (cameraria ohridella). It's a sad view to see those majestic trees
shed their leaves in mid-summer.

I hate to just come out and say nice picture, but that really is a
lovely image. The colour palette of the mushrooms is sublime, and is set
off well by the darker tones and texture of the wood.

That's basically what I was thinking.  The lighting is just perfect.  My daughter liked it too (she's interested in mushrooms).

We have a tree in our back yard which has a large bracket fungus growing out near its base.  We'll be having it removed fairly soon.

Cheers,
Dave
