Lightroom again -- AARGH!!!

I'm still using Adobe Bridge (from CS6 Extended) to ORGANIZE photos.

Once I've got them loaded on my Photoshop Computer I save them to my
homemade file server.

I then import the ones I want to use in LR onto the external drive for
my iMac.

I have Lightroom Classic because it's required for some online photo
classes I wanted to take - not because I expected to learn anything
(although maybe I have) - but to have other people to interact with.

I'm really isolated out here since my move to the country and if
Lightroom is the price I have to pay to obtain a social outlet ...

I'm not very comfortable with the NEW rental Photoshop and all the "AI"
stuff.

It still seems to me like it wants to tell me what to do rather than
making it easier for me to do what I want; like it wants to substitute
Adobe's artistic vision for mine.

I've been low key wanting to ditch lightroom for about 10 years now.  I tried ON1 a while back, primarily because it claimed that it could transfer lightroom catalogs.  Unfortunately, that didn't work so well, and there were too many features I used that worked so much better in LR.

Ever since I started using LR, I have been storing my photos in a directory tree that didn't rely on the LR data base to find things, so that when I do change, I'll be able to find things. I know that when I do change, it's going to be a hellish process.

What are we?  Virtual chopped liver?

I will admit that some of the things that it uses AI for work well, like
facial recognition, denoise, assisted culling, "delete object and fill"

It still seems to me like it wants to tell me what to do rather than

Yeah, I hate that "auto" on the exposure won't bring all frames of a
bracket to the same exposure.

However I do also use Affinity Photo 2 (last paid version) for special editing (e.g. clone and healing brush), sharpening  as well as focus stacking. In Photoshop I don't find my way as easy as in Affinity Photo.

Stan, the missing photos don’t show up in LrC at all—there are just blank grey squares, though they are intact on my computer.

Wait a second.  If there are spaces for them on the display, in that directory, then they are in lightroom. It just isn't showing previews.

If you click on library-> find all missing photos
do they list as missing?

If you select them then click on library->previews->smart previews (or standard previews)
do the previews for them show up?

If you double click on one of the grey squares, what happens?

That sounds like they got moved outside of Lightroom. You can tell
Lightroom to find them. It will ask you to point to where they are and
will change the catalogue accordingly.

I think that if files are missing, then lightroom will mark them with a
bang '!'.  I've noticed that the latest version of lightroom will mark
parent directories of missing files.

I have learned the painful lesson about only moving files using
lightroom.

I also have my directory tree set up so that it will still be easy to
find files when I switch to a program other than LR.
