Re: converting PEF to DNG .. help needed

I know there's a "codec" that allows DNG files to be seen in Windoze Explorer
that works with Win 7 Pro 64bit, because I have it installed here.

I think it's this one:

http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/dng/win/DNGCodec_2_0_Installer.exe

But I'm not sure. I didn't install it just now because I already have it installed.

feeling I don't need anything to big or fancy to do that..  I can't see the raw

Now that that is cleared up - I can go back to bed . But perhaps the converter
will be of interest to others on list ..

I found I still have a copy of DNG Convertor v9.5.1.  It's from 2016 so should
still work with Win 7.  I sent you a separate email with a link to download it
from Dropbox.  It's a big file (251 mB) so it will take a while to download.
Let me know if that works for you.

ALAS I have windows 7 PRO - the 64 bit WIndows 7 - so the last option doesn't
work... (says so specifically on line)

The Adobe doesn't work either... as I don't have WIndoze 10..

oh well, it's not really critical - faststone does work.

I've always used Adobe DNG converter which works well (or at least used to).
https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

One thing that you'd need to choose there is the target version of DNG.
I would first convert just one file and check it by opening in all the
software tools that you are planning to use, to make sure it is adequate.

Yet another option that could be viable for you is to install a codec for
viewing RAW files on Windows ...
If you have Windows 10, - you can get a free Microsoft's package "Raw Image
extension":

Presumably, it should read all Pentax DSLR's raw files, as it is using this
library: https://www.libraw.org/supported-cameras

If you need that same functionality on a Win-7 computer, Ricoh/Pentax has a
raw codec for Win-7:
http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/rawcodec_win.html

I hope this helps.

I have a couple of hundred PEF's that are all in one folder on my
harddrive.. would like to copy all of them to DNG's so I can view the
thumbnails in windows explorer on my computer.. I can see them in
Freestone.. but it is cumbersome for me with my work flow..

Can I do this in bulk?  Got a link to a free down load for me that will work?

thanks guys,

John - I don't really need to see the dng files in Explorer because the
only DNG files I have I also have jpgs of the same image - I use the
jpgs to search of course and then grab the dngs to put into photoshop
elements -

If you ever do need it, I think I have the codec you'll need for Window 7 Pro 64bit.

I'm getting ready to replace this computer, but I'll keep it just in case.

My video card is failing. No big deal for text & viewing images, but the one
computer game I like to play keeps crashing. Due to the crazy situation with
computer chips, I found I could buy a whole new computer with a faster
processor, more RAM and a 8GB video card for the same price as replacing an 8GB
video card to fit this computer.

This computer is OLD - in the sense that "Grandfather's Axe" is old (Mother
Board is at least 5 years old and I think probably closer to 10) and they don't
make many video cards that will fit inside it any more ... and the ones they do
make are EXPENSIVE.

The three drawbacks are it only has a 1TB SSD (M.2), which is not that big a
problem because I have additional hard drives - extra 4TB drives in case my
server has a drive failure, it's the Linux equivalent to RAID 6, so I can
rebuild the array if a drive fails and because it has dual parity it will even
allow me to rebuild it if a second drive should fail while rebuilding the array.

I have a 5TB array & a 10TB array.

The second drawback is I can't put a DVD drive in it. I know everything is
online in the cloud or stored on a media server and DVD drives are OLD TECH and
obsolete, but I like them and I want one in my computer. But this has the fancy
glass front so you can see the pretty colors the cooling fans make. It has the
bay where the DVD drive could be installed, but there's no way to open it
through the cover.

The third drawback is it came pre-loaded with Windoze #@%$^&%## 10 and I HATE
WINDOZE #@%$^&%
## 10
(I had a VERY BAD experience trying to upgrade, which is
why I still have Windows 7 Pro 64bit).

I am not looking forward to the fight I'm going to have to make it DO WHAT I
WANT TO DO.
