PESO: Birds Nest Fungus

I don't get the DSLR out much these days but I found some birds nest fungus, which I've never seen before, while weeding the garden.  It's small enough that getting a pic with my phone probably wouldn't have worked too well so I got out not only the DSLR but even my tripod.

For the second photo (a closer view) I had to abandon the tripod and set up some bits of wood from the garage to brace the camera.  That one was taken close to 1:1 then cropped a little.

Wider view:

Both photos taken with Pentax K5ii and FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro.

Very cool. When you say 5mm across, you mean the big cup with all the
little "caps" inside?

I'm even more impressed you even saw them.

Very interesting & well photographed. Who would expect a fungus like that?

Yes, that's the outside diameter of the "cup".  5mm is about 1/4".

I noticed them because I was close up and also because I'd seen photos of them, otherwise I might have thought they were some kind of seed.  There were a few small patches of them.

It's not actually mushroom season but we've had some wet weather lately followed by a couple of warm days so I wasn't surprised to see a few.

Very nice. These are also present in our area according to my books, so
one more on my wishlist.

I'd never even heard of those before. Interesting. And well captured.
