Ten years ago today our lives were fractured as much as our city when a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck at 12:51pm.
185 lives were lost in that event along with thousands injured. Countless buildings have since been demolished, mostly in the city centre. The central city is still undergoing a radical transformation. There are now lots of new buildings, several repaired and strengthened heritage buildings, and many empty lots being used for parking. It's slowly getting easier to navigate as the surroundings change (we don't go into the central city very often). There are still a few derelict sites which everyone is getting increasingly frustrated about.
Life feels as though it's largely back to normal (even despite Covid-19) but the scars will always remain.
I took my daughter to the official memorial service today. My own life has changed massively since then and it's hard to believe the past decade has disappeared so quickly. Given where I was at the time I could easily have not made it home that day.
These are just a few phone snapshots centred around the memorial. Only the last one was taken today.

Hard to believe that was 10 years ago, Dave! I remember your reporting
and photos from back then...

what a horrific experience to live through! Ttle gallery is quite
evocative; thanks for sharing your thoughts and your images.
Your little gallery is quite evocative. I was especially moved by 1093,
and in particular the shattered heart.

That’s an eloquent memory. Major events like an earthquake big enough to do serious damage are definitely things you remember for decades. We recently passed the 30 year of our pretty big one, and on the anniversary there was a lot of “what I was doing then”. It’s been interesting in that it seems that every 2-3 weeks since New Years eve, some place in the greater bay area, we’ve had a trembler of magnitude 3 or higher. Let’s just hope that stress is just being relieved a little bit at a time.

A terrible tragedy but great to see the resilience of the human spirit.
Waiting to see the Cathedral rebuilt.

We went past it on our way to the central library before the service. Its rebuild is expected to take between 7 and 10 years.
There are some good photos of it in this article:
Cheers,
