With Ralf's image, that makes 14, a rather respectable gallery.

To answer Paul's question, no, a pier is not a jetty.  Still, his Avila
Pier is my favorite image of the month.  Strong perspective, nice patterns
and textures, and a definite mood.  I also really like Misty, by Patrick
Nelson;  a fine, moody, minimalist image.  I think the long light pole,
jutting out from the main object of attention, really makes this shot
special.

I didn't see (either) Paul ask about a pier vs a jetty  but I had been
bothered by that as well..
which is partly why I gave up trying to find a Pentax taken shot for
this month.. and
the one shot I had (that would have been a repeat PUG submission ) was
only a pier... ;-)

According to Wikipedia:

"A jetty is a structure that projects from land out into water. A jetty
may serve as a breakwater, as a walkway, or both;"

So, a pier COULD BE a jetty, but it doesn't have to be.

Plus this is PDML, so I don't really expect strict adherence to matters
of proper form. It don't even have to be close enough for government
work IYKWIM.

Either way, if it’s good enough for a cormorant, it’s good enough for us.

I looked it up in the Oxford English Dictionary (the one that comes with a magnifying glass and is still massive).

The first definition of a jetty is a stone structure that marks or protects the entrance to a harbor. Another is a stone structure projecting from a wharf.

The last definition boils down to “a pier.”

Happy to share our OED with anyone who stops by!

Thanks to all for looking, liking and commenting on my "jetty".

Of all the definitions I found, the most popular was an object extending
into the water to create a harbor. In my defense, however, a couple
secondary definitions called it an object extending from the shore into
the water for the purpose of fishing and/or tying up a boat.

In any case, thanks for the positive comments and the lively discussion.

Interesting jetty pics.
A nice mood of Patrick's misty picture.
I'd like to sit in that chair for a while, perhaps with a phony fishing rod
if there are any people around there.
