Sadly, that happened to me back in 2003. Canon and Nikon were bringing out consumer level DSLRs. The Canon D60 (6mp) cost me 3000 GBP back in the days when I was earning good money. Kept and used some Pentax lenses, but my last Pentax cameras were MXs and an LX!
I wanted desperately for Pentax to release the MZ-D but alas, it never came….
Never went back, sadly. Although my wife still uses an original *ist D that I occasionally have to persuade into operation for her…
Hope all well,
Cotty

Oh, wait...that's already happening, isn't it?
This is the business Pentax (Ricoh) is in at present:

A camera to impress your photo colleagues.
Not a camera for me though as my photo subjects will get scared by the
scarlet rouge colour.

Pentax leadership must have a drug problem. I did a good deal of shooting
with 3 other photographers recently, and their question was “Is Pentax
really still in business?”

In a few years Pentax will be alone in the SLR market.
It will be a small market, but being the only player in it isn't a bad
place to be.

A typical collectors' item, just like the all black K3. Never meant to
take photos with. But if it helps them to make money then they sure have
my blessing.

If Pentax had released the MZ-D back in 2002/2003, the company would have
failed right then and there, probably with no white knight to save them. As
it was it cost them dearly and they never recovered.
Kyocera tried to build a Contax around the same chip and it killed them.
The sensor didn’t work.

The cataclysm of Pentax started in the mid to late 1980s.

Yeah, but we're still gonna' blame Cotty for it.
