I've been seeing a ton of them on FB and instagram - mostly phone
photos but none taken by any my Pentax buddies or actually by anyone I
know. I can't see them from my windows in NYC
possibly if I camped out on the roof I would have, but I sure can't do
that...

At the latitude of Riverside it might have been possible to get photos
if I had driven several hours East to get to some dark skies. In
Riverside, between dust, pollution and light pollution it's tough to see
anything in the sky less bright than the moon. Assuming that there
aren't clouds. I don't remember what it was like last night, but today
if I look for the bright smear in the sky marked by the sun, that is
just barely too bright to look at directly.

I saw it but very faint, not enough to perceive colour. The camera phone managed to get a little. Even that was miraculous considering I'm in a city with fairly bright street lighting, and at my latitude.
If I'd been out in the countryside I may have fared better, and I definitely would have set up my Pentax.

Overwhelming light pollution here.
And here. Even when I've been aware of an impending event in the last 50 years, it has inevitably been cloudy in the region, so no point travelling to find dark sky.
We're next door to a school with a large, flood-lit parking lot, so too
much light pollution. I used to consider taking aurora photos standing
in ankle deep snow with a temperature of -16F (tonight's forecast) a fun
challenge. Not anymore - I'm too damn old.

If you are being chased by a pack of taxidermists, do not play dead.
Apparently they've been very nice, but at -35°C, I'm not ambitious
enough to go look.
