PESO: Cocky Elephant Bull

I spent a couple of days sorting out a friend's K100D. Took some test
shots at my favourite haunt, Sable Dam in the Kruger Park, only 15km
from home. This young Elephant Bull, an Ascari for an older bull,
harrassed all approaching vehicles with mock charges & loud trumpeting.
Don't be fooled by his small tusks - he is still a lot of Bull! Some
idiots took him by surprise & shot past at speed when he moved to the
edge of the road. Eventually the pair moved off without incident.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/wisselstroom/51420102149/

BTW I see I had the date set as 28/08/2020 rather than 28/08/2021. The
K100D still did a fine job. The problem was an internally damaged D-AL
75-300. The camera was fine with any other lens.

So, what is an "Ascari for an older bull"?

Google turns up "Ascari Cars Ltd" named after Alberto Ascari, but your guy don't
look like he's quite streamlined enough for Formula 1 or Le Mans.

Thanks Ralf. Elephant droppings are an important food source for many
smaller creatures. Insects, especially butterflies, savour the juices of
fresh dung. Many seeds (from pods & fruits) pass through undigested &
are sought after by small mammals & birds. Early in the mornings the
roads are strewn with Elephant dung - they are intelligent enough to use
the roads when there are no cars around but, by mid-day, it has all
miraculously been cleaned away. Fortunately there are no Unions involved!

John, as Bob said, Askari is a Swahili word for a soldier in a support role
like a bodyguard or mercenary. The Italian word "Ascari" is simply a
spelling variation. Elephant herds are Matriarchal. Bulls are chased out of
the herds when they become sexually mature at about 15 years & live
separately in small groups. Older breeding bulls are typically found in
groups of 3 with two younger bulls known as Askaris. When the bulls are in
Musth, they make forays into the herds for breeding purposes. Fatal battles
between breeding males are not uncommon. In the Letaba Camp Elephant Museum
there is a skull with a tusk right through it! Anyone's guess what actually
happened there.

Hmmm.  A group of disparate organisms working together for mutually beneficial outcomes?  Sounds very much like a union to me.  Luckily, there are no humans involved.  They always bugger stuff up.
