It seems that Nikon also makes a df-m1 dot sight.

Main benefit for the Olympus is it doesn't require any kind of adapter.

Stick it on top, turn it on, EASILY align it for the lens I'm using. And EASILY change the alignment if I change lenses …

My impression is that the alignment has to do more with where it ends up when you put it in the shoe than the lens.  In theory every lens will be centered in the same place, so it’s basically just turning your camera into a rangefinder.  I certainly don’t doubt that the $130 Oly/Nikon sights work better than making one yourself for $20.

If I had a 3-d printer I’d be tempted to make some sort of rectangular tube I could just mount in my hot shoe for rough framing .

IF I pay attention, I can write down the settings and already know the alignment for each of the lenses I might want to use it with; mount the lens & set the dials accordingly to get the same setup every time.

Not sure it would work that well (i.e. easily) with sights that require adapters.

That's pretty cool. It's too bad modern lenses don't have built in
sights like the old Takumar 500mm did.

This can be a handy solution both for birding and for astro work.

At one point I had things set up with a cheap red dot sight:

I finally ordered it. Now all I got to do is get out and use it once it
gets here ... and I'm trying to work on that.

I had a pretty good Thanksgiving. I didn't get a Turkey or go out to
eat, but I had some left over turkey meat & vegetables from when I made
Turkey Stock a couple of weeks ago and I save all the "heels" from the
loaf bread I buy - just add them to a bag I keep in the freezer.

Added a few other ingredients from the pantry and made a "stuffing",
almost a bread pudding with turkey & vegetables in it.

If anyone else remembers the book "Stone Soup" from their childhood, it
was my version of how you'd stuff a stone if you were going to roast it
in the oven.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Soup:_An_Old_Tale

Anyway, after I "had a Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat", I
took my little dog for a walk and as we went around the corner at the
big ol' Baptist church I noticed the sun lighting up the trees in the
parking lot out front. Yellow & red and just glowing.

So I rushed home, grabbed my K-1 and headed back. I caught some of the
light before it went away.

... and had "another Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat" ...

Happy Thanksgiving y'all.
