Pentax or Olympus?

The recent posts about the K3-III got me to wondering again about whether I'll stick with Pentax and get a K3-III, or switch brands.

I know a few of the posters here have already moved over - I'd appreciate it if you could share with me (either here on PDML or by direct email) your experiences - positive or negative - with any particular Olympus model (I'm thinking of an OM-D of some kind).
And if there are any other people here who are considering switching (or have considered it in the past) I'd like to hear your thoughts, too.

The main reason I'm considering the switch is because I'm not getting any younger, and it's getting increasingly more tiring to lug around a camera bag full of gear.  Switching to a smaller format should go some way to reducing the weight.

Switch to an iPhone 13 Pro Max. It will provide excellent 11 megapixel photos with wide, normal and short tele lenses. Lots of nice features like portrait and panorama modes. Excellent video too. Good in camera editing as well. Oh, and it has phone and web browser functions, When you need big glass or higher res use your Pentax,

Check out this guy's stuff.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/klatuu13/albums/

Brian was a long time friend who also happened to be a master at all things
photography.
He contracted polio when he was 12 or so, at which point he lost most of
the use of his legs. The first time I met him, he was bootin it up the
street towards a friend and I, a couple of Leica rangefinders bouncing off
the crutches he needed to get around.
As he got older and his body started to fail him, he needed to downsize
from the Canons that he settled on when digital came on, and decided on
Olympus as the best option out there. Almost all of his scenics were shot
from the driver's seat of his minivan using a clamp with a tripod head that
attached to the partially rolled down window.

I thought the gear that he had was nice. He was into photographing whatever
birds he could attract in by the time he moved to Olympus. The long lenses
aren't all that long, of course, and are much smaller. I don't think I ever
saw him with a wide angle lens with his Olympus.

He had a lot of big  prints in his house from the Olympus. The quality is
there with the equipment.

I don’t see them as mutually exclusive.  There might even be good adapters that let you use K mount on u43 bodies.

I’d suggest renting a body of interest for a weekend and going to a local track when a club is putting on a track day to get a feel for how it works in real life.  You could splurge and rent both an OLY and a K-3iii.

Or, you could buy the Oly for general carry around and just rent whatever top of the line Pentax for a week or two when you’re heading out to a race.

In any case I’d be very tempted to just buy a used copy of the penultimate top of the line camera.  Unfortunately I don’t think the K-3iii prices will fall significantly for a bit.  Maybe for some big sales in the next couple of months if you’re lucky, otherwise probably not until February.

I agree with Paul about the capabilities of the iPhone.  I have an iPhone
12 Pro Max, and it is an excellent camera, with normal, wide and tele
lenses.  My son tells me the 13 is even better, by quite a bit.

It's not the range up to short tele that I'm having a problem with.
I don't use wide angle much, so for most of the time a camera with
the 16-50 covers the close end of what I expect to be shooting.
On the K-3 (or my current K-5) I think that's pretty similar to the
field of view of the iPhone's telephoto lens. Even adding the 50-135
to the camera bag isn't a weight issue if I want a little more reach.

The problem comes if I've got the 60-250 along, especially if I'm
using that lens the majority of the time. After an hour or two I'm
beginning to notice the strain on my arm muscles.
(And let's not talk about using anything longer than that).

That's the issue I'm comtemplating addressing by switching to 4/3.
A phone camera, even one as good as the iPhone, doesn't solve that.

I sold my 400+ sigma and pentax and switched to panasonic dc-g9 and pana
leica 100 400. Equal to 200 800 on 35mm.
Half the weight, dual lens and body SR. Bird, animal detection, amazinf AF
etc etc.
And the best part if I look through the viewfinder I remember my MX.

John, I was having similar weight problems with my K-5 and accessories (17-70 usually on the camera, 10-17 and 50-200 in the bag; sometimes the 80-320).

I tracked down a LowePro Off Road bag, which has a great built-in hip belt. That takes all the strain off my neck and shoulders, but keeps everything accessible.

The two drawbacks are that it isn’t waterproof, and has been out of production for several years.

First images from my panasonic are excellent:

It's amazing, a fancy mirrorless body and a Leica superzoom for the
price of a K3III. Sorry...
