Hi gang

So my new iMac 24" is working reasonably well, and am happy with it so far,
M3 chip.

However I have two older external HDs that are about 6 or 7 years old and a
new external HD that is my new Time machine. My back us are labeled 7 and
7a, for the most part 7 does not show up at all anymore but 7a and time
machine do, but, when i let the machine g to sleep for a while and wake it
up, 7a does not appear and sometime Time machine does not appear in the
side bar.

I have to restart the machine.

OIm using a usb hub to usbC device and have tried directly connecting hd7a
and 7 but with little luck, after waking up 7a does not appear.
I also bought a new cable for the hD'ds.

Any thoughts, is my time machine drive showing up as more stable cause its
new??

I should add, its not always the case of the HD's not appearing but once in
a whale, especially if it sleeps a long time

Hi Dave,

You might have a format problem with the older drives. If there’s enough free space on one to hold all the files, you might want to move them over and reformat the empty drive. Then, repeat with the other drive. Or simply by a hard rive of 2T or more and move the files to that drive, then reformat the empty drives.

There's an aphorism about letting sleeping animals lie but I'm not sure it would be useful in this case.  Maybe the one about teaching an old animal new tricks would be more apt?

You may wish to check your energy savings settings on your new iMac, to
see if you have the external drives set to sleep when not in use. It
could be, depending on the drive, that they go to sleep and vanish from
the sidebar.

As always, if you change a setting, restarting the computer is the next
step.

I had problems with my mac crashing and found out that there is a related problem with sleep mode on some macs.  I don't remember details as to year of mac or OS level, other than it applied to mine.

This may have been mentioned already, but if you run Disk Utility (it's in Applications / Utilities) do they appear in the sidebar? If greyed out you can right-click on them and select "mount".  I do this with my external SSD as I like to leave it plugged in but not mounted unless I'm actually using it.  My Time Machine drives are always physically disconnected when I'm not using them.

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Doug i clicked that item off now i'll see how that works

David, only my one back up, older model, and my time machine, newer model
show up. I have to disconnect the second back up from the computer, then
plug it back in for the sidebar to show the drive, if the computer se=leeps
only 7A shows up but not 7 so i have to unplug and replug. as mentioned it
may be older drives or older formatting
