I've always carried my cameras like that ...
you just need a longer than normal strap, no fancy base bracket.
Also use an ancient Galen Rowell chest pouch
as a waist pack to secure same setup at my side when not scrambling.

(though I would love to find a good source for long straps,
mine I found in a drugstore in Williansport, PA in late '80s,
bought out their stock when I went back a year later,
never found a better strap sinc, though I have shopped)

I looked at that project. The neat part of the base plate is that it takes the load off the standard lugs (not designed for that kind of carry) and puts the load at the base which allows the camera to lay flat more reliably.

It's primarily targeted to work with an SLR or largish EVF camera's shape and largish lenses. It would be mostly useless with the different form factor and relatively small/light lenses of a Leica M, for instance.

I use the Peak Design Leash strap, which max out at about 145cm (57 inches) (plus a couple cm for the anchor bits). It's light, very strong, and easy to use cross body, as well as easily length adjustable to suit your body and preferences. It can be taken on and off a camera in a couple of seconds. A nice strap!

Measured mine ....
set at about 50" or so,
with an additional 25" available,
13" in the strap, and 6" in each camera attachment.
(quick releases similar to the Tamron's and others)
... truly extraordinary max. of 75".

I tend to use compatible quick release buckle (maybe Tamron)
camera attachment straps for extra bodies, but those are shorter
than what measurement says is 16" max for these
now no-name straps (label says StrapToIt)

Heh … Mine is usually set to about 46". Longer than that and the camera sits too low, swings around too much for me. :)

I have anchors fitted to most of my cameras, so I just swap the Leash to whatever I need to use it on. (I actually have three of them, for tripods and second camera carry…).

I use a Black Rapid dtrsp. It‘s long,  D esigned for cross chest use and bulletproof. The camera slides on the strap so it can be raised without moving the strap. It’s the only strap I’ll use.

BlackRapid RS-4 Retro Classic, Original Camera Sling Design, Strap for DSLR, SLR and Mirrorless Cameras, for Right-Handed and Left-Handed Photographers, with On-The-Fly Sling Length Adjuster https://a.co/d/0Evq5Nk

Looks like the target market is photographers who use sling straps that
attach to the tripod socket on the bottom of a camera. One problem with
those is you have to disconnect the strap to put the camera on a tripod.

My Sun-Sniper strap clips on to the ring for a Manfrotto RC2 adapter,
but I still have to UN-clip to mount the camera on a tripod.

This looks like it will allow you to mount to the tripod without having
to remove the strap. I'd have to replace all my Manfrotto mounts with
Arca Swiss, but I think I'm kinda headed that way anyway.

Looks like they made their goal (more than made their goal - about 4.5x
so far).

Noting that "Rewards aren't guaranteed", I wonder when it will be
available to just buy one retail?

The Black Rapid attaches to a tripod socket as well. I bought an Arco type tripod plate that includes a tripod socket adjacent. It remains on the camera full time.

Not sure I understand. Does your Arco type plate have an additional
tripod socket on the plate itself so you can leave the plate in place &
screw the Black Rapid's connector into the plate?

My Sun-Sniper strap clips on to the ring for a Manfrotto RC2 adapter, but I still have to UN-clip to mount the camera on a tripod.
