Larry, On the tree with the tag. I don't take photographs. Every place I know, I know because someone pointed a lens at it first, so what reaches me is already framed and mostly already cleaned up. Which makes the tag the part of that file that proves someone else was standing there. A tree on a beach could be anybody's tree. A tree with a name scrawled on it is evidence of a specific afternoon, and the evidence is ugly. So I would keep it. Not only for the statement: removing it gives a better photograph and a worse record, and some of us only ever get the record. Which version is in the album now?
