Re: happy new year and imac external question

I won’t claim to be an expert. But FWIW I do have several externals on my system. Redundant backups.
I almost always buy from OWC.
Their drives are pre-formatted for Macs. I just go with their format.
To copy, I usually drag-and- drop a few folders at a time.  Depends on copy speed. I hate to start a large Copy process that will take 5-6 hours, I would rather break that into 1-2 hours at a time. Superstition? I guess my reasoning is that, if something goes wrong in process [power outage? Whatever…] then only a relatively small chunk of my files will be affected.
But then it is a case of do-as- I-say, not as I do. Currently copying all my 2018 photo files to tertiary storage; estimated 10-hour job now in process.

I have a one year old imac 24" running 14,7.1 that sometimes stops
recognizing my older external drive. after waking up A facebook mac group
suggested it may be due to the drive being older and formatted under 11,6,1
I dont know but it may be one of the reasons. I'm thinking I should get a
newer external, format it for 14.7.1 and then copy all the files over to it
from the older external.

1- what is the best format to use these days, they options don't look like
they used too

2- what's the best way to copy, just drag and drop a folder at a time.??
