New stupid trick

There was a bird in my front yard, I went to photograph it, and it didn’t fly away.  However my K3-II developed a new stupid trick.

In normal TTL mode, when I press the shutter it will seem to be fine for a moment, then it’ll lift the mirror, open the shutter and freeze up, refusing to do anything, even power off, until I remove the battery.  Once the battery has been removed, replaced and the power switch turned on, it’ll reset to being able to see through the lens, until I next press the shutter.

If I put it in live view or video mode, it locks up directly.

sigh.

I suppose that I could try reinstalling the firmware.

Try doing a factory reset. It’s a pain because you lose your user settings,
but it might straighten out your camera.

No joy.  I didn’t really have anything to lose, but it didn’t work

Are you by chance using off brand batteries?

Kinda clutching at straws, and you've probably already tried, but toss a
different battery in.
I suspect you are looking at a main board replacement.
God is telling you to buy a K3III.....

I tried multiple batteries, they work fine in my other bodies.

I also tried a different lens.  I once misdiagnosed a body because I didn’t check the lens on another camera.

That’s my prognosis.

God is telling you to buy a K3III.....

That had crossed my mind too.  B&H has a used one for $1400, the question being whether a warranty is worth $300.  There’s also one on ebay for $1300.

I do still have a working K-1 and K-3, and a K-x with a slightly wonky shutter button.

I also haven’t had a lot of chance to play with cameras lately, so I’m in no hurry.  If I run across an amazing deal on one, then I’ve got a good excuse.

Don't forget to check with KEH. They also have a repair department ...
might be worth talking to them (based on what I remember from your last
experience with the Authorized repair shop).
