I am planning a trip to Australia end of October. It is a family visit trip
so not much photography time other than family photo's. Any suggestions of
places to visit in two area's and surroundings if I get a chance? Any places
where I can buy black and white film or should I take enough with me. Will
probably take the K3 and a mz5n.

Thanks for any input

Hi Patrick

I'm in Sydney and although I've been to both Brisbane & Perth, I don't have a
great knowledge of photographic places to visit there.

In Perth I can recommend Kings Park botanic Gardens - there are some great views
across the Swan River towards the city as well as local flora. A trip to
Rottnest Island is apparently a tourist favourite to see the friendly quokkas -
haven't been there myself, though.  I'm sure the Western Australian Visitor
Centre in Perth city would be a useful source of ideas.

As far as Brisbane is concerned, the Southbank precinct should be worth a visit
but again, the Visitor Centre would be the place to start.

Hope you enjoy the trip!

Cheers
Brian

I made enquiries amonst those I know in the antipodes and this is the sole response so far:
"I'm in BrisVegas, outer suburb, but cannot think of one place i would tell a visitor "you must go see".  He could have a Miami-ish experience if he wants to go to the Gold Coast, just down the road"

Be very careful of the phrase "just down the road" in that country!

From the one Perther on the board:
"Don't know about B&W film. Perth is amazingly unphotogenic. It is not a city of great character or charisma. Fremantle is way more interesting, and perhaps it qualifies, seeing that it is more or less attached to Perth. There is an amazing lack of interesting architecture in Perth. Fremantle has the convict era stuff which has merit. I can't think of any particular advice I could offer anyone, but am happy if you want to put your friend in touch.

Somewhere back in the Tag thread I may have put up some pics of the old railway workshops and brickworks, all of which are being preserved. I find "industrial archeology" to be of photogenic significance, but with almost everything being less than 200 years old, there's not a lot of choice. There's an awful lot of concrete and corrugated iron here, and some bizarre recent modernistic footbridges and stadiums that attract attention by controversy rather than merit."

Do you want me to pass your email over?

Mike David and Brian
Many thanks for your feedback. I am visiting my brother and sisters in
Australia for the first time since they left 20+ years ago. The main purpose
of the trip is to see family before we are too old. On the Brisbane side I
believe a side excursion to the Sunshine coast is planned for 5 days. I was
planning to push to see Freemantle when in Perth. I am trusting that the
family has a good idea of where to go. I was asked if there is anything I
wanted to see but had no idea.
Thanks once again
Patrick

I remember overhearing a couple of young Aussies in Greenwich once: “jeez, I can’t wait to get back, I’m sick to death of old buildings”. Must have been from Perth. I have distant relatives in Perth. Of course, anyone in Perth is distant, but you know what I mean.

I’d recommend somewhere in Melbourne but I left in 1958 so my recommendation wouldn’t extend much beyond the maternity ward. Which was great, by the way.

I did a quick Google Maps search of Brisbane and there are a bunch of
camera stores in Brisbane. Checking just a few via their web pages, some
of them do stock B&W film ...

You could check them online & search to see if any of them stock the B&W
film you prefer to use.

I didn't do a search for Perth ...

The best store for film and processing is FotoFast at Taringa - he carries a wide range of film, including medium format, offers a
1-hour service, and has good modern processing equipment.
You can park underneath the building, at 200 Moggill Road - watch out for the entrance across the sidewalk, traffic is very busy
there and it's easy to miss!
Locally, I can recommend Lone Pine Koala sanctuary, to see the aforenamed 'drop bears', plus kangaroos, birds , a wombat or two etc.
For a view across Brisbane, go to Mount Coot-tha.  We have some good family areas too - South Bank, the W=Queensland Museum puts on
some excellent family oriented exhibitions, the Queensland Art Gallery is good too.  There are a number of large shopping malls in
the suburbs, the most convenient dependent on where you will be staying.
I'd be happy to meet up if you have time, and just ask if there is anything specific you need clarification on.
