I just got a facebook PM from Paul with “look what I found”
When I clicked on it, it purported to be a facebook login, but the URL wasn’t at facebook

Someone used it to steal Paul’s facebook password and use that to phish all his friends.

I’m posting it here because I expect a lot of others here will get the same PM.

Another great reason to stay the hell away from Facebook in particular and
social media in general.

The one I got had an https with a youtube tease and an address that
ended in .ru

as long as you don't follow links in messenger you are safe..
my rule of thumb in facebook is never to open any message from any
friend unless the
tease line (that shows in the notification panel)  is very specific and
in the "voice" of the sender..
"look what I found" was what the tease said in the message from Paul's
account.

sometimes you really do want to send someone a message privately so I
think most of us know
to put something very specific in the first few words of the message
which the person getting it
can recognize it as really you.

I use common email for that. The daughter says I'm pretty much the only
person that sends her emails.

I have recently learned how to send text messages.
Pretty cool, actually, but might be a little personal for crackbook.

Yes, I received the same.

On macOS, all you need to do is hover the mouse pointed over the link and the Finder will display the complete text of the link in a pop-up. You can instantly see whether it is what it purports to be that way. If you don't understand what the link's text is, it's best to just delete the email entirely, and send an email or whatever flavor of comm msg you like to the person who purportedly send the email and ask them if they sent it to you…

Nothing to be worried about it if you just use a little normal precaution before clicking on things willy-nilly.

(Since I strongly doubt that Paul would send me an email with that kind of content directly and personally, rather than through a group post or a post to PDML, I just deleted the email without looking at it very closely... :) )

I don't personally do facebook myself, but I don't think this is a reason to
condemn "social media" all together. After all, PDML is "social media".

There are criminals trying to take advantage of you in anything you do. You have
to be careful, but you can't just withdraw entirely from life.

I have problems with text messages - fat fingers. I can text, but only because I
found a stylus that works with my phone.

I have a wonderful cheat, an app called Pulse.  It allows me to send texts from my computer (actually anything I have on the net).

It does not work, however, on iPhones because apple doesn’t do conventional SMS, and doesn’t allow any app but iMessages on their IOS devices.

Too much social media is proof that a person has no life to begin with.
