PESO: emperor dragonflies

This for me is the first time I was able to shoot a pair of emperor
dragonflies.
Just plain luck to see them 'in copula', busy shaking off another
attacking dragonfly, close to where I was standing on the edge of woods.
These emperors are always very fast in flight and the only other chance
to shoot one is when the female is laying eggs on the water surface.

Henk, that PML does so well - way better than my screw drive HD on the
K5. Another opportunity would be when they hover.

Great shot but shouldn't this have a PG rating. ;-)

Some dragonflies do indeed hover, so you have sometimes one or more
seconds.
The fast emperor is not one of these, but I have earlier taken some in
flight pics in the way you shoot on a racing circuit.

The PLM is a fast and silent lens, however all Pentax bodies (perhaps
except the K-3 III) are weak in AF.
I'm shooting dragonflies in flight in AF-S with single point, because
AF-C is unusable.
Would be nice to work with fast AF of one of the mirrorless systems.

Thanks Ralf.
Yes, parents should be warned for their Sunday walk with the kids in the
woods.

Alan, that review confirms my experience with this lens about AF-S and AF-C.
The body is the limiting factor in AF. However this review is from 2017
so they haven't tested it on the K-3 III.
I bought the K-70 a few years ago to fit the 55-300 PLM (it won't
combine with my K-5) and for me this is a pleasant light weight combo to
walk around in nature.
For birding you often need a longer lens which I don't have.
Only if it gets stuck I would switch to a mirrorless system like the
Fujifilm XT-5.

Henk, I agree with this:

"I'm shooting dragonflies in flight in AF-S with single point, because
AF-C is unusable."

I have had great difficulty shooting birds in flight & aerobatics with
the K5 & HD 55-300.  I found MF gave the best results but still only
about 10% savers.

A chap in Johannesburg produced some very good aerobatic shots with a
K3ii & PLM. As you say, the K3iii would probably be even better.

Alan, today I saw an emperor female laying eggs in the pool nearby.
As I said this is an event where you usually have a few seconds if the
dragonfly is not disturbed.
AF-S single point, no need to use MF.
I noticed the small red-eye damselfly only in lightroom!
The difference in size of both is very remarkable.
