That's a nice visitor! I would call it a tortoise - don't really know the
difference from a turtle. We only use the term turtle for the ones in the
sea.

Although box turtles are superficially similar to tortoises in terrestrial
habits and overall appearance, they are actually members of the American
pond turtle family.
I love the green sea turtles that visit the Maui beaches. We have several
pond turtles in the pond of our local park, and they also inhabit the
nearby river.

That is basically true. Most tortoises live on land, most turtles on sea,
and tortoises generally have higher shells and duller colors/patterns,
but there are quite few exceptions, as is true with the
distinctions between butterflies and moths.
