Highgate is divided by a road (Swain's Lane if I remember). The top part
where all the rich & famous are buried with very ostentatious
headstones, angels, etc. seemed better but they wanted £35 to get in
there. Views of London from the very top. We visited the low part at
only £15. Remember Karl Marx & George Eliot amongst others. There were a
few souls trying to tame the jungle. There was a Chinese funeral in
progress right at the bottom where there was still a bit of space available.

Thanks. This one is maintained by volunteers. They have some before and after photos showing how the Friends organisation has transformed it from an overgrown condition by clearing brambles etc. which formed a canopy. Now that light can get to the floor the flowers can grow. Some cover remains for the animals of course.

Highgate Cemetery is much, much bigger than this and correspondingly difficult to maintain, I guess. Last time I was there, less than two years ago, it was in good condition.

An interesting gallery. At least it's not a complete jungle. Parts of Highgate Cemetery which I visited some years ago were virtually impenetrable. Our local Muni have been "maintaining" the town environs as a nature reserve for some years.

I at last had the chance today to visit a cemetery close to where I live. It is a closed cemetery, which means they’re no longer taking long-stay residents, and it is now maintained as a wildlife reserve. Today was an open day.
