PESO: Cheerio, Miss Sophie!

One of the many very discrete outlets in Calais, catering for the needs
of their customers from across the Channel:

https://www.fotocommunity.com/photo/cheerio-miss-sophie-fotoralfbe/45934356

There's a story behind the title of the photo and everybody in Germany
knows it. As long as I can remember, the following sketch has been a
fixture on many German TV channels, on New Year's Eve. Miss Sophie
celebrates her 90th birthday with her dearest friends. There's just one
little problem: she has outlived them all by decades. So, her Butler
James has to stand in...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n7VI0rC8ZA

A happy new year to all of you.

Never broadcast on British TV until 2018.  Frinton's drunks were a regular appearance in other shows.  I particularly liked his snapped cigarette prop.

Not sure about that, Mike - I seem to recall seeing it in the UK before I left, in 1981, thus it was familiar to me when
it showed in OZ

"The sketch is almost completely unknown in the United Kingdom, and its first national British television airing did not come until Sky Arts broadcast the film on New Year's Eve 2018 (although a year before, the film had been screened on Grimsby local channel Estuary TV).[16] The Sky Arts broadcast included English subtitles for the German-language introduction, the end of which briefly faded out followed by a fade in on Frinton, cutting out the moment when the German announcer introduces James."

It may be that you saw a news report on the continental phenomenon or maybe even a broadcast of (or were present at) a stage production.  My first knowledge of it was from Youtube.
