Up until now I have been using and getting good service from a Drobo multi
disc raid like (but not really raid) hard drive enclosure.
I would like to add a second storage device as the Drobo is getting a bit
old.
They appear to be not making machines and haven’t for some time, so the
dumb question is what's reasonably good in this product category?
I presume that whatever I buy will be a raid device of some sort.
My major criteria is it should be as idiot proof as possible. What I like
about the Drobo is how ridiculously simple it is to use.
Thanks

The problem is that idiots are just too damned clever.
I’ve been using a Synology (DS416) for a few years and am not unhappy with it. When I bought it I was looking at Drobos and chose it instead.
I’ve been helping out with a friend’s IT support company and the customer has several rack mounted Synologies, with what seems to be pretty close to the same software.
While underneath it’s a linux box, the UI is done via a pretty simple website.
I ran into an issue with mine because the way it was configured each volume is limited to a maximum size and I had to split my data into two volumes. I expect that isn’t an issue on the newer ones.
B&H has the six bay used for a pretty good price:

Looking on Ebay, they seem to hold their value, the older ones, for the most part aren’t a lot less expensive than the current models,
Though here’s one for $200 (no drives)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/275280147945?hash=item4017f9b5e9:g:~OUAAOSwohNiYGn6
One like mine, with no drives, for $325
https://www.ebay.com/itm/185141607159?epid=2255130428&hash=item2b1b4cbaf7:g:4oIAAOSwCd1hgYMU
There are also two drive synologies, that don’t have the RAID advantages, for less money.
Thanks

Second vote for Synology. Seems to work well but I haven't proven the pudding, yet.

When my LAN box crashed some years ago I took out the two drives which were
in good condition and was able to transfer the data with a linux machine.
Then I decided to not trust any LAN and just use two separate external hard
drives as backup as I remember Godfrey recommended one day. Pretty easy to
just copy files from my desk top drive to the 6 TB external ones. When
these are full, 'll buy two bigger new ones.

IF I had not already purchased most of the components to build my
home-built file server I would have gone with a Synology 5-bay NAS box
when they first became available.
I like the Seagate IronWolf drives & you could get the current "Synology
5-bay NAS DiskStation DS1520+ (Diskless)" + 5x4TB drives for about
$1,100 USD and with WD Red 4TB drives for about $1,115 USD.
(The WD drives are $3 more than the Seagate)
... plus shipping, tax & whatever fees Canada imposes on imports from
the U.S.
That's about what I spent to build my home-built file server, although I
also have 5x2TB drives in addition to the 5x4TB drives.
Synology DS1520+:

Drives:

It also looks like you can buy one with the drives already installed for
about $800 - $1,000 more than buying the diskless one and installing the
drives yourself.
If I were starting all over I'd get the Synology instead of building my own.
