The company running the Eiffel Tower (SETE) have the rights not to the
tower itself but the nightly illumination.

fotocommunity.de have a special agreement with them to the effect that
you may publish those photos via your account on their website if you
add a mention transferring the SETE the rights to the image.

And it's not only the Eiffel Tower. There's a rule in Belgium saying
that you aren't allowed to publish photos of the Atomium in Brussels
regardless if they've been taken by day or night.

As of January 28, 2022, it is no longer allowed to take and publish
photos of the two Belgian nuclear power stations near Liège and Antwerp.

The whole world is goin crazier by the day.

Agree. Ridiculous. I took a shot of the Atomium years ago when
travelling past on a bus. Also  a night shot of the Eiffel tower from a
hotel window on the same trip. Would it be legal to publish them here?

While in Paris on several occasions during the 1970's, I took a number of photos of the Eiffel Tower at night: since these predated any grant of copyright, I think I would contest any claim upon the copyright by a third party, and also amongst others on the grounds I am not a EU citizen and therefore not subject to their laws while outside the territory.
On a more general note, I agree that the world has gone crazy, with corporates trying to control images beyond any reasonable extent, and suing, in the USA, companies outside the USA for trade mark infringement where the defendant has used the brand long before the existence of the appellant's brand.

I refer to the response of the commander of US forces at Bastogne - "Nuts".

This has been one of multiple issues with photography in France for about 40 years.  IIRC, unlike most other countries where one can have no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public place, in France everyone has the right to refuse to have their image taken, anywhere.  So you are, theoretically, supposed to obtain permission from every individual who happens to stray into one of your images.

I have taken and published images of the Atomium, from our last trip to
Belgium, and the Eiffel Tower, both in daylight and at night.  I also took
and published a short video of the light show.  Let them chase me down.

And this attitude of entitlement and disrespect is why so many places don't
like American tourists.

Just sayin.

Oh, come on, Bill. Give me a break.

I took and published those images because there was no indication that it
was improper to do so.  There are no signs at either the Eiffel Tower or
the Atomium stating that photographs are forbidden.  They are more
than happy to accept Euros from us crass Americans.  The images we take
home and show friends certainly promote their tourist industries. In three
decades of travelling, I have yet to run into a local who seemed to
resent Americans.  While Americans often have a bad rap, in my
experience tourists from certain European countries are far louder and more
demanding than most Americans.

I always respect museums and religious sites when they limit photography,
as do almost all American tourists.

Besides all that, Larry's comment about my needing a good lawyer was said i
jest, as was my reply.
