Dumb Photoshop Question

B
Bill
Fri, Sep 10, 2021 1:50 AM

I've been using the subscription version of Photoshop for a short while,
and have run into a decidedly odd and irritating behaviour.
Photoshop insists on changing the filename to "untitled-xxx.xxx rather
than using the original filename.
The only explanation I've been able to find involves Apple changing
something in their operating system, but I'm not using an Apple machine.
Anyone know how to fix it?

thanks

bill

I figured out a work around, or perhaps just how it now works. Rather
than using "Save As", if one uses "Export", then it saves using the
original filename.

I can get used to that.

Hi Bill - can you say when this happens?  I can find nowhere in the "File" menu in PS where this happens on my system.
The only similar event is when I select "Open as copy" from the Camera Raw "Open" dropdown, when the suffix "-x" is
added to the original file name, where x starts at 1.

That seems a bit strange.  I've been processing some photos today and the only times it's added anything to the filename is if I've reopened a raw file through Bridge that I've already processed and saved previously.  For the record, my workflow is to use Bridge to organise / select my raw files then edit in Adobe Camera Raw, finally opening in Photoshop to convert the profile and save.  I found Photoshop produced better jpg files than ACR for some reason.

I think this is a recently-added feature as today is the first time I've noticed this behaviour.  I only discovered it when it didn't ask me to replace the existing file when I saved the newer version - instead it saved a filename with "-2" appended.

I've just tried opening a couple of jpg and psd files and this behaviour didn't occur.  FWIW I'm using an iMac.

Sorry for not being helpful :)

Cheers,
Dave

It has to do with photoshop opting for lossless file types when you do “save as.”

I'll include screen shots later. I'm having a new internet package

OK,  did some screen shots:

Here you can see the open file with the correct file name

https://flic.kr/p/2mogiv2

And here, the drop down menu showing the Save As command that I am used
to using

https://flic.kr/p/2mokb6t

And finally, what happens when I try to use the Save As command:

https://flic.kr/p/2mooYZk

Note, Photoshop has dropped the lettered prefix in favor of "untitled",
and is using the numbered suffix.

It's curious. As I mentioned, if I use the Export command, it works fine.

thanks

The only area I can see this might happen is if your History settings are set to create a new object (snapshot, etc.).
In that case, on my copy PS will use the name "Open" , but not "untitled".
I could not get it to change the file name in the way it does on your system.
Sorry not to have been much help.
