One of my ongoing frustrations with this trip to the northwet is my frankenbook Mac has been crashing programs, or crashing the whole computer multiple times a day.  It most frequently crashes Lightroom, often while I’m imporitng files from the sd card.
Over the past couple of days I’ve had three imported dngs show file corruption.  Big bands of bad data.  They have all been on the same Sandisk extreme SD card, and if I delete the files and reload them, I get the same problem.

I don’t know if the problem is on the (pretty damn new) SD card, the K-1, or if somehow the laptop is corrupting the files by crashing during an import.  I have had problems with not being able to remount files using the same card reader after a crash.

The first thing that I’ll try is just to stop using that card. I suppose that I could also try activating the write protect tab before importing files.  I did recently (last summer) send the K-1 off to precision for an expensive repair, but they barely give better than a stoplight warranty.

Sigh.  I hope that it’s just the laptop.

I guess that I can also try a fresh reformat of the card when I get home.  When I’m on road trips I don’t delete files from SD cards until I get home, because I don’t trust backups.

Note, it turns out that when I reloaded one of the files it reloaded fine.  Interestingly, this was the one I tried deleting and reloading a couple days ago without luck.

What makes your Mac a “frankenbook?”

We had 2 17” Macbook Pros,  one was dead, one had a dead keyboard.  The guts of the one with the dead keyboard (2010) was put in the body of the one with the dead mainboard which I think was a 2011.  I think that the 2T SSD had been in an entirely different computer (possibly a newer 15” that had died).  Then there were some issues with fans, that seemed to be fixed.

Interesting, but not likely the source of your problem. I’ve had cards that experienced intermittent failure, perhaps depending on where the camera tries to write. But you know much more about that than I.

We took a run down to Thor’s Well and Perpetua yesterday afternoon.  When I’m at the ocean I prefer to run multiple bodies and not change lenses in process, and I’ve gotten at least one bad file on a different card, shot on a different camera, than the ones before.  I also had my computer crash while importing files from Lightroom. I’m pretty sure at this point that the problem has to do with the computer.

I got home in the wee hours last night, moved my catalogs to the home machine, and the bad files seem to be reloading OK on the desktop.  So, yay.

There seems to be one file damaged in some other way that I can’t recover.

In other news, I seem to have trashed the card latch mechanism in slot one of my K-3, in the same way that it had been trashed in my K-1.  The door will still hold the card in place, so it is still functional, albeit annoying.

I had a similar problem with my K-5.  Using a good magnifying glass
check the bottom of the card slot for bits of plastic.  I found pieces
in the slot that appeared to look like they were from a damaged SD card,
although I could never identify which one.  I managed to fish the pieces
out and the latch has worked properly since.

good call, unfortunately the contacts act like barbs to keep the piece in.

It’ll take some interesting work to remove

It does take some patience...If I remember correctly I used a straight
paper clip and one with a small "L" bent on the end as tools and was
able to maneuver the piece(s) around so when I tipped the camera they
were able to fall out.
