DxO Photolab 5 doesn't run under Mojave so I've bit the bullet and
updated to Big Sur. As was to be expected, some of my older software
won't work any longer. LR6 still does as long as I won't re-install it
and so should have Photoshop CS6, except that it doesn't.
Given that most of my photo editing happens DxO, I need something to
replace Photoshop only for occasional processing of other images. Just
brightness, contrast, gamma, colour balance, cropping and re-sizing.
Any suggestions besides GIMP?
Alternatively, which non-ransomware version of Photoshop does still run
under Big Sur, if any?

Affinity Photo is my favourite photo editing software for tasks where LR
falls short, such as for focus stacking and object removal.
For 55 euro you get a copy with free future updates.

Photoshop Elements does everything you mention above (and a lot more).
I suspect the UI will be quite familiar to anyone used to Photoshop.

Is Elements still happiest doing things in 8 bit, though?
I've been using Affinity Photo for the last few years. I've been very
happy with it.

Elements should to everything except JPGs in 16 bit.

Elements is almost twice as expensive as Affinity Photo and has no free
updates.

Given that the original poster was at least considering a non-ransomware
version of Photoshop (which would almost certainly cost even more, and
would also not have free updates), Elements seemed to be worth mentioning.

And, most of all, it's 8 bit only.
Thanks for all your answers. I'll have a closer look at what has been
suggested.
