I wrote to Tom to ask. He says:

As far as I know, there's never been a Fox and Goose, but the 1960s predates
me. Do you think he meant the 'Fox and Hounds' at Bursledon where I can
imagine you would drink mead. It's been horribly fancyfied now, but in the
late 60s/early 70s was a great haunt of Ros and myself.
