Check out the *original*: Eisenstein's "Battleship Potemkin". The scene
from "The Untouchables" that Dave refers to is based on the "Odessa
Steps" sequence from this 1925 masterpiece. This film was hugely
influential, the Odessa Steps sequence in particular (Terry Gilliam did
a brilliant and funny tribute to it in his film "Brazil").
Sergei Esienstein is responsible for one of my favorite filmmaking
quotations: "A smooth transition is an opportunity lost."
