If it's the same as the DA*300/4 it rotates through 360 degrees with detents at every 90 degrees and the base is removable by the use of a coin leaving behind a dovetailed rifle scope mount type of affair attached to the rotating ring.

It is very handy to be able to rotate the tripod mount when you
handhold the camera/lens. If not, the tripod mount gets in the way of
a good grip.
