Yep, you've got it.  Elements don't just separate from each other.  The 
rear aspheric element is a  composite made from a ground glass portion 
and a molded optical glass portion, it's this element that breaks down 
and separates.  Too bad as otherwise this is a wonderful lens.  I 
understand that Pentax is now able to repair these but I haven't gotten 
around to sending my sample in.
