*istDS and flash

You're not going to like what I have to say, but the best thing would  
be to either get a new dedicated AF540FGZ that is fully compatible  
with the DS body, or go for a non-dedicated, external autoflash from  
Sunpak, Vivitar, Promaster or Metz.

You don't need TTL ... what you need is reliable flash exposure.  
However it comes to happen.
