I'll put in the obvious plug for a Mac. :-)
Mmmmm.... 20" core2duo iMac...

If you don't go for that, I'd recommend an Intel core2duo-based
motherboard over an Athlon64 at this point. Lower power consumption,
and better performance. Intel chipsets tend to be solid performers,
too.
