I just bought one big exernal drive which is big enough to meet my
needs for a while. For archiving I write two copies of each DVD, one
of which is stored offsite.
For burning I don't use any special software... Mac OS X does burning
quite well by itself. I did find an incompatibility between my
burner and the new 16x discs: I have to burn them at 2x or the burn
will hang while closing the session. One of these days I might
replace the burner with something a little more modern (it's only
rated for 4x anyway).
